I want to get a traditional Rosca de Reyes for King's Day this year. There are a lot of bakeries that sell Mexican sweet bread in the area- any tips on the best rosca?? Thanks!!!

Thanks! I grew up in Yucatan and have memories of some amazing roscas- I was hoping for a "best kept secret" kind of bakery in San Antonio. HEB is awesome for Mexican products, but bread is my biggest weakness and I want to introduce my American husband to Rosca in a memorable way... will definitely look into La Michoacana.

I just saw that Horno Mission San Jose has them. I asked and they are $18.99 for a large one and $9.99 for a smaller one. What are they exactly? Fruit bread? If so I think I will go back and get one.

In the western Christian tradition, Epiphany is celebrated on January 6
Rosca de Reyes is the sweet ring bread that is enjoyed during this time. According to custom, a small porcelain baby Jesus is baked into the bread, and whoever gets the doll in his or her piece must host a party on February 2, Candelaria Day.

I guess it is not fruit bread then /: I know everyone always treats them as undesirable but I have always found them enjoyable and it has been years since I've had one. The Rosca de Reyes reminded me of fruit bread for a reason.

Lookie here is the little doll that is inside them (:

Is Candlemas the day they bring candles and sing too?

Candied fruit is added ( assorted fruit cut into strips such as figs, orange, lemon, mango or cherries), and I guess there are many different recipes, so you might find exactly what you want

As empressdawn2 said, contact this place and see what they have

I saw a lot at Walmart. If Walmart's bakery is making them, they're probably nasty.

Well, walmart's probably are nasty- but I wouldn't discount all roscas because of Walmart! Rosca is kind of like the Mexican (or is it Latin American?) version of Panettone, but the fruit's on the outside and we generally only eat it on Dia de Reyes instead of all season. Like all pastries, the quality and flavor depends on where you get it- hence my request for recommendations. Traditionally, whoever finds the baby Jesus has to throw a party for everyone- generally providing tamales for all. My family never did that though, all the kids just wanted to find Jesus : )
