I think part of the "too cold to go to school" thing is just not knowing any better. If you're born and raised in south Texas for the last umpteen generations, you're not going to get that 30 degrees really isn't cold. Or that just because it's cold doesn't mean it's going to snow. Or that your kid isn't going to freeze down to the sidewalk if it's below 20 degrees. I really do think that a lot of people are genuinely afraid of this level of cold (I KNOW it isn't that cold to us northern transplants...).

I also think that people really and truly don't know how to dress themselves or their kids for cold weather. They don't understand that you don't HAVE to have some kind of arctic gear, that layering works really well.

My wife called me at work this morning and asked if I still wanted my son to go to school because it was so cold. I basically responded with of course he needs to go to school. He is a sophomore.

My favorite line I hear down here all the time is "It's too cold to snow"

A neighbor of ours once said to my dad "It's freezing!" and Dad said, "Nah, it's 50 degrees! Freezing is 32!" Neighbor was horrified freezing was so cold.

There's just no connection to this type of weather, unlike those of us who grew up in places with cold and snowy winters.
