The CEO of a San Antonio based company plans to build a 35 million dollar complex for the homeless in San Antonio. Model after the ones in San Diego and Phoenix.

The place will help the homeless get back on their feet as well as better house them.

Default Homeless Center in San Antonio

Doesn't San Antonio already have a Community Action Program of which the
Dwyer Avenue Center for transitional housing is part of?

As for a private company building a center for the homeless....what's the catch and who will fund this after it is built?

Downtown SA has the Samm Shelter, but it's out dated.

Bill Greehey and several private donors will be the main funding for this project. Bill Greehey is going out Bill Gates style. He gave St. Mary's Univeristy a 25 million dollar donation a few months back.

I believe we watched the special KSAT ran about the homeless in San Antonio. He was deeply moved and decided somehting needed to be done.

He along with others including the Mayor Hardberger toured the San Diego facility and the Phoenix facility.

I believe after it is built it will be a non-profit that seeks donations.

Default Homeless Shelters

Thanks 210 for the answer. I'm all for rich folks donating money where it can be useful. What makes me sick is when you hear about some rich guy blowing a million dollars in one night at a casino.

Bravo Bill Gates and Bill Greehey!

I read the title of the thread and immediately thought of Bill Greehey without even knowing the rest of the story. Bill(my hubby) works for Valero and met Bill Greehey when Valero took over the Benicia refinery(used to be Exxon) and according to my husband, Bill G. is a man who gets things done. Hell, when the Norco refinery was hit by Katrina, Bill G. responded before the Feds could do anything and made sure that the employees families had everything that they needed. This guy is a real Gem!

I think this is wonderful and greatly needed in San Antonio, has anyone else heard anything more on this. I am a 36 year old mother of 2 and am in a homeless shelter thanks to samm ministeries. Speaking from that side of the fence it really means something to me that there are still people out there that are willing to help others in need. Even I being in the position that I am in do try to still help others if I ever see someone hungry on the street I will feed them and have even taking blankets down under the bridge on cold nights to those in need. Remember that the homeless isn't only that alcoholic or drug addict on the corner tring to come up with money to get high, it affects many classes of people. Take a look under the bridge, last time i went was last week to hand out blankets and there was a woman with 2 kids young like mine and my heart hurt because those kids didnt deserve a life like that and if I had my own home that family would of went home with me that night.

There is more information at this link.

Community Initiatives

Here's a quote from that page on when it will open: "The Haven for Hope campus will be fully operational in the fall of 2009, but will have a phased opening, beginning with the community dental clinic in January, 2009."
