I will be moving to SA next month. Looking at several areas to live and a little bewildered. I need an area that has great schools and daycare options, family friendly and a reasonable commute to Lackland AFB, which is where I most likely will be working.

Helotes too far of a commute especially if you deal with traffic and all that.

I disagree, we've lived in the NW part of town for nearly nine years total while working on Lackland, and my commute is 20-25 minutes. Granted, I try to commute around rush-hour; and there are numerous routes to take that avoids a lot of traffic.
We've lived in the area just south of Helotes twice now, and love it. It puts you close to a lot of shopping and other attractions, as well as on the edge of the Hill Country. If you like scenery like this, then Helotes is the area you want to look in!
(And before anyone jumps on me about it, that is not the view from my house! But it is in Helotes, and similar views exist all around this area to include Government Canyon State Natural Area!)
I created the following map of suggested areas to look in, it is by no means all inclusive but it gives you an idea of the better areas with easy commutes to Lackland...
If you are intent on buying what I would really recommend is a good realtor. We had one the second time we PCS'd here from Belgium and it made the world of difference. This particular realtor was recommended by an old military bud, and he not only did a great job in finding us a home but has helped numerous military families that we recommended him to. I'd suggest also looking on the south side of town around 410 and Hwy 16. I live there and the commute to Lackland is only 15 minutes with very little traffic.

Southside is definately much closer to Lackland than Helotes but it isn't the "cozy" suburban area that Helotes is.
If it was up to me, I would definately pick southside over Helotes. Southside is quickly becoming much nicer over time.

If I were to live on the southside it would have to be south of 1604. There is some beautiful land down there...

My husband works at Lackland. We live in RedBirdRanch. It is a VERY easy and fast commute to the base...maybe 15 minutes. I think we did it in 10 when I was in labor with our daughter.

Sadly, I predict most of the ones for sale end up becoming rental homes. The market is very saturated. I hope the best for you, though!
