The average American moves after seven years. Keep that in mind.

Thanks for all the input. we have about 16 months before he can start applying anywhere because he just got promoted in his unit. We have been looking in both renting and buying areas. Thanks for all the information on the SAPD, there is only so much a website will give ya. Almost sounds like when he was applying for the TSA, it took a year and a half just to get his foot in the door. He was deployed for 15 months, so he has that under his belt. Where we are at all new communities are HOA and I despise them.

Do you think he should start applying now, or wait until his 16 months are up?

I would definitely recommend he contact the SAPD recruiters now to see what the status of hiring is. Worse they can tell him is to hold off, but if it takes a while then he will know when to start.

SAPD recruiters were part of the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) when I retired over five years ago, so I know they specifically target prior military personnel.

Still, this town is brimming with veterans so there is competition. It might help if he got some college credits in criminal justice in the mean time if he hasn't done so already...

Cheers! M2

He will be done with his bachelors in 2014. We thought about going to Corpus Christi, but cost of living is really high.

Well, good news. I was at SAPD training this morning and asked about current recruitment. The officer stated that they are heavily recruiting and should continue to do so for at least the next year to 18 months. He recommended contacting them for further details, and prior military are preferred as they usually don't have the "issues" that individuals coming straight from the civilian world may have. Apparently many potential recruits are being disqualified for a variety of reasons...

By the way, I remember that the department does pay extra for officers with college degrees. At least that was how it was back in 2006...

Cheers! M2

HOAs are not that bad. They keep the neighborhood from looking like trash.

We must be on the same page my husband just got an email back from them and they are needing recruits. The Dec class only has 25 where they need 50 and the March class has not even filled up yet. So we might be moving sooner as long as he can keep his E5. Fingers crossed.
