Just out of curiosity are there any plans to upgrade all of Loop 1604 to freeway status?

Doubt it. There's no need for that on significant stretches.

Agreed. If you drive all the way around 1604, the population density is very light around the non-freeway portions on the far south side.

It is the best way around SA on I10 so do the rest of us a favor and make this a faster bypass

Just stay on IH-10 a little longer and take Loop 410. It's a 4-lane highway all around the city. Or if you're going north, take 410 North to I-35 and back north to 1604. You'll miss the 2-lane portion entirely.

I hope they turn Loop 1604 into a freeway from Bandera Rd to US 90 on the Northwest Side and from FM 78 to IH-10 on the Northeast Side sometime in the near future. Overpasses would help a lot, especially in the current SuperStreet area between Culebra and Bandera on the Northwest Side. The same thing could definitely be said about US 281 between 1604 and Stone Oak/TPC Pkwy.

I did this once a couple of years ago and thought 410 had construction and traffic causing it to slow down the times I drove across. Typically I drove across in morning rush hour between 8-9am. I'm in Plano now and when heading to Phoenix will go by way of I20 and miss SA and I will miss SA being so close to Houston.

The northern half of 410 has been under construction in various segments for most of the last decade. As of about 6 months ago, it's not anymore.

But before you change your current bypass plans, for the next 4 years, I-10 on the north side of town will be under construction between 410 and 1604 and a couple of miles to the west of 1604.

I'm really surprised it's still a two-lane highway on the northside. With all the growth on that side of town, hopefully it'll get renovated to at least an 8 lane highway, maybe even a 10 lane. I'm sure that area won't stop growing anytime soon so might as well build huge now for future purposes. Anyways, just my two cents.

Happy Monday!
