We had these before, now we have a whole other type of weed that is all icky and wet when you mow them over, but when we had those I cut them all up using a weed eater at an odd angle. Probably not the best way to handle this but they did die and grass started to grow before the other weeds came.

If you have no luck identifying what it is try the Garden forum here. They solved one of my queries rapidly.

The green looks like St.Augustine. The dead is possibly Brown Patch or damage to the roots from Grub Worms. When I was a kid June Bugs were fasinating..now their just Dead Bugs (every chance I get)

Yes. Also, once you have dead St Augustine grass, you may see mud tubes around the dead grass stems. These are Agriculture or Desert Termites that eat the dead grass, but thankfully not wood as Subterranean Termites do. There was a swarm of Desert Termites a couple of years ago and now I have some of these in my backyard.
