I will be relocating to the San Antonio area at the end of April for a job transfer. I will be working just off the riverwalk. Initially, i am looking for a really nice apt community in an upscale, safe neighborhood. Ideally, the area has a lot of restaurant options, bars, some boutique-like shops, up and coming or "trendy" area and things to do for a young adult. It has to have character. I was Thinking of being closer to Austin (I believe it is the canyon lake area) but have no clue what it is like. I will be living alone so I don't want to feel too isolated but attractive surroundings helps. I hear Austin is a great town with great music scene, restaurants, etc and I feel I may be happier if I am closer to it. I don't want more than a 30 minute commute with traffic if possible but I just really want to love where I live. Any advise is greatly appreciated!

If you're working in downtown San Antonio, then it doesn't make a lot of sense to live near Austin.
You will be driving to work 5 days a week. You will be driving to fun maybe 2 days a week...so it makes more sense to live near work. Drive to Austin for fun, don't live halfway to Austin and hate your drive here every day.

I would suggest the apartments near the Quarry shopping center. There are several complexes there, all nice, fairly new, and upscale. There's plenty of shops and restaurants there and you'll be a short drive from downtown SA. It's a nice, safe area. There are little boutique-like shops in Alamo Heights and along Broadway. I have no idea about bars but I assume there are some around there.

I will be moving to SA next month, and I was there this weekend to look at/ research apartments. The Quarry has some nice places, but availability seems to be a major issue at the communities there (and more or less, at most of the communities I've looked at,all over SA). Basically, there was nothing available at communities near the Quarry for the time I want to move in, which is over a month from now. I would recommend that you visit SA and drive around - that is a great way to get a feel of the neighborhoods. There certainly are some great areas to live in. I also noticed that while some communities are very nice, the area surrounding them can be far from desirable. Driving around was extremely useful to me.
Good luck with your search!
