Any suggestions on where to get good watermelon that's not overpriced? I love this time of year when it starts showing up!

Whenever picking one, look for one with a nice white belly. This means it's been ripening a while.

Does that mean it'll be sweet? I would kill for a good sweet melon.

The best one I had was from Luling called Sangria. I don't know if you can find them in S.A. but I paid $7.00 but I think it was well worth it. It was big and sweeeet....MMMM MMMM....real red like sangria wine too. thus the name..I guess. In case you want to take a road trip just to get out of town..

Wish I could help, but I'm not willing to pay more the $5 for one, looks like I'll be waiting for summer it seems when the supply is greater.

I saw a trailer load of cranberry red meat ones on SE Military the other day. I've got a cantaloupe that's not quite ripe. Pearsall or Charlotte I believe is Melon country.

I've purchased some reasonably priced ones from those vendors on Military before. I was hoping someone would chime in with locations on the North side.

Back when I worked in produce for HEB, I was advised by the manager who'd been in Produce for years, that it's a good rule of thumb that it will be sweet. Also that the stem is really dry.

Try Chicho Boys on Laredo, its way across town but the produce is good and priced right. Plus they last longer than the produce at HEB by far.
