If there are permits required, how bad is it gonna hurt. Also If I buy a prefabbed one from Lowe's will I need a permit to put it up my backyard?

It may depend on whether you have an existing slab or other. I believe we built a shop a bit larger on an existing slab and needed no permit. So long as no utilities are involved. Not sure on a pergola ... neighbor built a good sized one. I can't recall if he required permit.

If there's no electrical or plumbing, no permit required as long as it is under 200 sq ft. At 200 sq ft+ you need to have a permit. Your project is 168 sq ft.

First off TrapperL is incorrect on the square footage, its not 200sf the new law states that you will need a permit for anything over 120sf..
The new law went into affect March of 2012...
The city website has not be updated but you can look at the PDF files or you can call Rachel Young @ 207.0141.
Also you will need to get your HOA ACC approval as well...

Looks like San Antonio has finally joined the other big scumbag cities and now everything requires a permit except painting. Just another way of milking th citizens outa money. Last time I was downtown to pick up a permit, it was a half day wait. Best of luck getting one now. Per the above linky:When do I need a permit?

It also increases your home's taxable value. A permit enables the Assessment District to know what was added to the exterior without bothering to send a technician out to look at it. Gotta figure that was a factor.
