How fancy does the dress tend to be for white collar jobs in the SA area? Is it like Dallas where a lot of people like to think they are fancy and dress up in ties and jackets all the time or is it more like the rest of Texas for a button-up shirt and slacks or a polo is the norm?

Where I work, it depends on where you are in the pecking order. The top three levels or so always wear suits, line management types wear an Oxford-style shirt and tie, and below that it's trousers and a polo. And since I'm in academia, I'll add the professors wear whatever the heck they want!

All of the freedoms of academia make being a professor one of the best jobs around. Of course, the significant downsides are the difficulty in getting tenure track jobs nowadays as well as the publishing and research pressure.

Thanks for your response.

It depends, many places are relaxed that allow Dockers and knit or even linen shirts (plus jeans on Friday if you're lucky ); others are a bit more formal requiring ties and possibly even suits.

Where I work (I'm a government contractor) we can usually dress relaxed but if we're teaching or meeting with the "higher-ups" then it's usually more business-like (suits and slacks).

But for the most part San Antonio is a lot less "fancy" than those "dandies" up in Dallas!

Cheers! M2

In my office, the older men tend to wear slacks (with cowboy boots) and an Oxford style button-down with a tie while the younger men were the same (minus the boots) with a sport coat. Sometimes the younger guys wear their boots too. It works.

Depends on where you work, I am extremely lucky that our CEO allows us to wear jeans all year long.

It depends entirely on what you do and where you work. There is no standard. San Antonio runs the gamut from formal offices where coat and tie is mandatory every day all the way down to jeans w/ polos.

I think all the posters are correct, but as to whether "more like Dallas" or "more like the rest of Texas", I would side with "more like the rest of Texas".

It more depends on your position/grade/title than your place of work...as stated above, "relaxed" works for some folks, suits and ties expected of others...directly connected with your rank/position even in the same building.....hard to give you a "one size fits all" kind of view....
