Hello
I just moved to san antonio in december and yes I know there are military bases here. But im curious why are helicopters curcking at night alot. Tonight especially its been about 45 minutes sulphur springs road at southcross area. Is there allt of crime or maybe looking for fires being the wind is suppose to pick up. Or is it training drills?? Ive noticed this alot lately

Thanks guys
Liz

SAPD officer involved shooting occurred shortly after 10PM this evening. News helicopter and SAPD helicopter most likely, Airlife possible, but not likely, as the news would have reported this.

They found a body east of Calaveras lake yesterday. Southcross at Sutherland Springs is lower east side so yes there is crime for sure further north. BlackHawks and DPS choppers return to Stinson Field and elsewhere at night after border runs. Not sure why though the "Pres" is turning them loose. SAPD choppers all fly out of Stinson and of course. When not on calls they keep watch on the Loop and other roadways.

P.S north of Southcross up WW White is high crime area. Outside 410 not so bad I imagine.

There's lists of reasons for the helicopters. You're probably in the flight path for Stinson. It's usually only crime related when the helicopter hovers or circles around numerous times.

There actually are hardly any military helicopters in the skies here. Mostly AirLife, SAPD, and news helicopters.

If it's after 10 pm it can be narrowed down to SAPD/Airlife.

I know when most are coming and going as I am a stones throw from Stinson Field. I was listening to my scanner the night the Police chopper went down at Pleasanton rd. and Military Drive in HEB's parking lot. I heard it lift off and head out as it responded to a chase near 90 west and Cupples or Gen Mc area. Then in no time I hear the Chopper pilot or other officer saying "Mayday, Mayday We're going down". It was wicked. I think they were thinking they land just behind HEB (Dickson) at first. They auto-rotored down on the west side of the HEB. Hard landing.
