I've noticed in my many years of visiting Texas, it seems as if nearly everyone's lawn turns ugly brown in the winter months. This is not something we see in California, so I'm curious what causes it and if there is anyone out there who has a solution? We are moving to San Antonio later this year, and I want to be able to keep a green lawn all year if possible.

Thanks!

It's this season we call winter. It causes grass to go brown and dormant, and trees to lose their leaves.

The roll out plastic stuff sold at Costco in Vegas! Other than that, you WILL deal with winter....some years more than others.....

In Texas, this is accomplished with overseeding.

Funny people.

Seriously though, San Antonio doesn't exactly have "harsh" winters. Your average low temperatures are actually higher than where I live in CA, and unless I missed something...there aren't too many snow days there. So I guess I just really don't understand the difference. Maybe it's the specific types of grass? Does anyone truly know? While I appreciate the smart-ass replies, I was actually hoping for some true insight.

Sorry, OP...you get alot of know-it-all sarcastic answers...I wondered the same thing, myself. Why does everything turn ugly, brown here in winter? Of course, now it will in summer with watering restrictions.

Here is a link to the very best place in town to buy seeds for different kinds of cool season grasses you can use for overseeding.

http://www.dkseeds.com/

I have heard that DK Seeds has test plots of many different varieties, so you can actually get an idea what the grass the seed produces will look like.
