We live in the outskirts of Austin TX. We are relocating to SATX and decided to move into the NEISD. We have a 5 yr pre k who is on the autism spectrum and a 15 yr daughter who is has add so attentive schools are what we are seeking. How would you rate schools in each level elem etc? I have come across Castle Hills. As for Middle Krueger and High Schools Lee and Roosevelt based on my children needs. Any thoughts or others? Thank you so much!

It is tough to go wrong with any of the elementaries north of 1604.

GreatSchools.org Search: neisd

A couple of them are so new, they won't show up on that site. Castle Hills is just a 7:10 in a district with many 9:10 and 10:10 rated schools.

The further north you go the more likely the school will be capped. Make sure you check with NEISD's website for details on that. The area you mentioned, though, most likely won't be capped. Lee has the International School of Americas so you can't go wrong with that, but I'm unaware of the enrollment process. I am unfamiliar with special ed programs at NEISD. Sorry.

Things might have changed, but I would not recommend Krueger, Roosevelt, and Lee over other NEISD middle and high schools. They would actually be close to the bottom of my list, but I don't know much about their special education programs. Although it has been almost 20 years since I've been in elementary school, I attended several elementary schools in NEISD and knew special needs students who attended others. The ones that stood out as having excellent special education programs were Wilshire Woods, East Terrell Hills, and Ridgeview. I have firsthand and secondhand experience with Harmony Hills, Northwood, Serna, Oak Grove, Regency Place, West Ave, and Jackson-Keller. Out of all of those, the first three I listed stood out as specialists in special education. I don't think that the test scores of the best and brightest students who are more likely to score high anyway due to their economic background is indicative of how good a school's special education program is.

The only capped schools right now are Tejeda and Bush (MS). All elementaries are open.

That's hilarious you would think that Reagan would out perform lee by a much larger margin than that considering the hype it gets.

We are moving to the area next month and have a 3 yr old on the spectrum. We decided to put him into a private preschool (One for Autism) until he reaches school age. I hear that NEISD, NISD and Alamo Heights are the best for special needs kids. Make sure to find one with an ALE program or your child will have to be bused. Also, look into a group called MoCAA (Mothers Connect About Autism). It is extremely active. They have meetups, Mom's nights out, support groups, exercise groups, etc. They have been been a tremendous help with transitioning to the San Antonio area. They have a private group on Facebook.

It was announced last week that Churchill ranked #436 at Ranking America's High Schools - The Washington Post out of 22,000 high schools in the US. That means it's one of the most challenging high schools in the country.
