US News 2013 - Texas Rankings

US News recently released their 2013 selections for the Best High Schools in the U.S. This list specifically addresses college readiness by following a three-step process, (1) all students had to be performing above "average" for the state, (2) from those that passed #1, then whether the school's least advantaged students (income, race) were performing above state average among similar students, (3) those schools that passed both the criteria for #1 and #2 were then judged for college readiness using AP or IB test data (participation rate AND pass rate for these exams). *See Methodology link below for detailed criteria used.

It's interesting how this list has so many more Northside schools than the other two lists. (I'm not bashing Northside. I'm actually puzzled why more of their schools aren't on the other lists.)

It also doesn't include two well-regarded NEISD schools mentioned in both of the other two lists: Johnson and Churchill. It's truly an odd cross-section of schools in the area. Although the schools at the top of the list are fine schools, I would hate for someone new to the area to put so much stock in this list that they exclude schools not on it.

I wondered how Lee HS could be ranked higher than other schools in NEISD considering that its achievement numbers are lower than all but Roosevelt's, but now I think I understand.

Quote:
Step 1: Attains performance levels that exceed statistical expectations given the school's relative level of student poverty, as measured by state accountability test scores for all the school's students in the core subjects of reading and math.

Step 2: Achieves proficiency rates on state tests for their least advantaged student groups (e.g., black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students) that exceed state averages.
You can compare all of the NEISD schools at the link below. Lee had the lowest college readiness score and the second lowest math and reading scores.
