Me and some friends want to go play some baseball/softball this weekend, but I need to find a field. It seems most softball complexes are open only to leagues. I did find a couple parks with some fields they rent out, but I was wondering, can we just go use a high school or middle school softball/baseball field? We used to go play ultimate Frisbee on the practice football field at Carke High and Ronald Reagan but Im not sure if baseball fields are off limits?

I think that It depends. if you are hoping the fence, you should not be there. there are some schools that I practice on during the weekends, just me and my 2 boys. I never had a problem. the only issue you might have, but I doubt it, is that if a person has a written letter from the school that they can use the field and you don't. I practiced with a team, and we had a letter from the school. as long as we cleaned up we were ok.

It's sad that most school grounds are off limits these days. They were essentially parks for neighborhood kids after school. With the gangies and vandal types abundant I guess it's a necessary evil. Besides the city apparently has enough tax money to build little parks everywhere. Each school district appears to have it's own security or school police. One would think the school grounds would be patrolled enough to discourage undesirables.

thanks guys. I got to looking a mccalister park, and looks like there are 16 diamonds there. Some of them are nicer with lights, but im thinking the other ones that don't have fences at least might be a first come first serve type field. Anybody know this for sure?

You probably should just call San Antonio Parks & Recreation. On the website they claim the baseball fields there are leased, which probably means you need permission of the leasee.

City of San Antonio | Official Web Site - Parks & Recreation Department

I think the field at Breckenridge Park can be reserved directly from the City by calling 207-7275, at least the signs on the field say that. I don't know about cost.

I contacted the parks and rec dept, apparently you can rent the fields at McAllister (or any other city park field) for $24 per 1.5hr time slot. I asked about this weekend and she said so far there were no reservations all weekend for all the fields, so I don't know if that means people just use them without paying if if they just actually hadn't had any rentals yet

They may not be that strict with it. Though I imagine they will run anyone off with a pickup game going in favor of someone with a paid reservation.
