Dos Hermanos out on highway 16 towards Poteet is the ultimate hole in the wall Mexican resturant. It is a bit far for most people but still within San Antonio city limits.

Address is:

11420 State Highway 16
San Antonio, TX 78224

No authentic Mexican food in San Antonio, a lot of good Tex Mex food though. Not a lot of Mexicans in San Antonio either, a lot of Tex-Mex people though... The closes to authentic are Que Taco on Blanco (near 1604) Guajillos on Blanco (near 410). Just FYI, if they serve anything with american, cheddar or any kind of yellow cheese; run fast, that is not mexican.

Tex-Mex is harder to find now. What there is is a lot of estilo Jalisco which is not Tex-Mex. Times change and immigrants keep coming with their types of food. Many old Tex-Mex restaurants were in neighborhoods where many of the original Tejanos have moved on, many to Loop Land, and so the older restaurants give way to newer cuisines.

As a reminder Tex-Mex is an American cuisine using American ingredients and related to Southern American cuisine. Sharp Cheddar Wisconsin cheese and orange enchiladas, not brown, is Tex-Mex.

Try El Tipico on Goliad for excellence. El Torito on S. Presa still has the older Tex-Mex recipes but have gone downhill in both their food and environment.

Bee's on Lockhill Selma is great. Taco Riendo on San Pedro used to be.

The original Blanco Cafe was awesome.

I've never been a fan of authentic Mexican food. Tex-Mex has alway been my favorite and for that I prefer, to name a few, Taco Haven, El Tipicos ( Goliad Rd.), Nichas (Roosevelt not 410), Lupita's on Culebra, Olivias in Floresville and Herberts in San Marcos. And that really is only a few.
