Construction of the highly anticipated Google Fiber network is ramping up, but the tech giant still isn’t ready to say when signups for the service will begin.
But a big construction push is getting underway to build the network, a Google spokeswoman said.
San Antonio is one of a handful of cities across the U.S. getting the high-speed fiber-optic network that promises gigabit speeds, about 100 times faster than basic broadband service.
“We’ve started to ramp up our Google construction efforts in San Antonio. You’ll see us around town digging and stringing fiber cables so that we can deliver Google Fiber’s super-fast internet to the city,” said
Clarissa Ramon , Google Fiber’s Community Impact manager. “As we lay thousands of miles of fiber-optic cable throughout San Antonio, we’ll keep residents updated along the way.”

I won't get my hopes up. Austin was told 2 years ago they're getting closer to having Fiber, and I don't think even 10% of Austin residents have Google Fiber available in their neighborhood today.

For now I'm happy with my 300Mbps down/100 up connection by Time Warner. But it's comforting to know that in ~2 years TWC and AT&T will have Google around as a threat, which will force them to stay competitive and improve their customer service. As far as TV goes, Google has a ways to go to catch up to uVerse or DirecTV in terms of their UI's. I hear their TV UI is laggy and looks outdated. I have no problem waiting a couple years.

One thing positive I'll say about TWC is that they're lightening quick to answer the phone. What happens beyond that point is a crapshoot.

Definitely, not sure how many people noticed how quick AT&T announced availability of Gigabit after Google announced that Fiber was going to be rolled out in SA after the initial no - 2 Weeks. Which meant AT&T was just sitting on the capability.

300mbps down is the fastest Time Warner offers at my address. 45mbps down is the fastest AT&T offers at my address. That was recently increased from 18mbps down, as the fastest they could offer me.

I was always was a fan of AT&T reliability but the cost of service, constant price increases on the stupid set top boxes and substandard speed pushed me to the limit. I cut the cord. Bought Apple TVs for all my TVs, went to Time Warner 200 Mbps Internet, got an HDHomerun that is use with antenna in my attic (along with getchannels app for my Apple TVs), plus Hulu, Netflix, HBO Now, Ooma for my phone...a bit of a pain to get it all switched over but I'm saving a ton of money vs UVerse. Might try Google Fiber if they ever get to me, but I'm sure that could be years. One thing I do read is that with their settop boxes, they charge you $5 a month but after two years you own the box. AT&T kept raising their box rental fee with no option to buy.
