Our family is looking to relocate to the San Antonio/outside SA area. Both of us are currently federally employeed in the Washington, D.C. area and looking to relocate due to high taxes in Maryland and the area's general decline... We have family that currently live in and around SA and are familiar with a few areas.

However, has anyone else relocated and was able to obtain federal employment (already employed previously) with another agency? If so, any tips? My husband is a marine veteran but I realize the area is full of vets as well!

Any information would be appreciated!

With two Air Force and one Army bases comprising Joint Base San Antonio, it shouldn't be too difficult to find a DoD job here. My agency is hiring all the time to replace people that PCS/retire/etc., just as an example.

I agree that it "shouldn't" be too difficult. I just wasn't sure how it would factor in that we're not currently local. I was just wondering if anyone could speak to that experience and have had luck. My husband got out of the marines and came to work for the dept. of comm. and would prefer to work more closely with military related business. He has been applying to several jobs via USAJOBS, but I was just more curious if anyone has had luck with applying while being out of state. He stays with relatives and can easily fly to interview, or even accept a job (after notice has been given to current employer) but we were just wondering if anyone can speak to whether or not agencies in the area are open to out of state applicants.

Thanks!

Isn't there some type of process you can begin that you can apply for positions currently in the area. Once you find a job you are interested you apply. Not sure how everything works but I know people who definitely move state to state and keep their DOD employment.

You better have a job with the DoD lined up. That's all I can say from our experience working on both Ft Sam and Lackland.

We wouldn't relocate w/o secured employment. Currently feds, not contractors. I was just wondering if someone could speak to having
Applied while not living in the area and still obtained federal employment.

Did you stay with the same agency or did you change all together?

I was a contractor in DC and went government to get here. Search USAJobs for JB San Antonio, Ft. SAM Houston, Lackland, and Randolph AFB. Usually quite a few listings at all pay levels.

Yeah, that's what we've been doing. We have a couple automated searches running. Just wondering if not being local will hurt us. Fingers crossed...

So ready to be done with MD taxes!
