I think that doing any kind of daily talk show... radio, tv, sports, non-sports, etc. has got to be considered one of the most difficult jobs in entertainment. For me, you have to have to have intelligence, humor, insight, know when to shut up, and just pure charisma to sustain it.

As far as sports talk goes, Mike & Mike seem to have done a pretty good job of keeping up a decent format for long time. (I think it helps that their shtick is the "play off each other" thing.) Colin Cowherd sounds tired of doing it, and he was polarizing to begin with. I used to love Dan Patrick when he was on ESPN with Rob Dibble, but the SI show now seems to drag. Jay Mohr? Eh.

Dat is clearly not right for this role and was hired for his past playing experience. And no offense to Jason personally, but he's not incredibly engaging as a host, either. And definitely not that Geoff guy... Listened to him once, and he was taking incredibly long, dramatic pauses for absolutely no reason.

The only local stuff I've heard in SA that kept my interest and sincerely entertained me was that Gonzo guy.

I preferred his predecessor, Chris Duel. Chris never played college or pro football, but at least he was entertaining.
I have never had any trouble with Dat's accent, but I agree that he typically doesn't add much to the conversation and confuses guests in interviews. I liked the show when Chris Duel was on there, but my impression of why he got canned was different than what AlamoCpl said (that he made it about "look who I hang out with")

I thought the execs got upset at the focus being on the callers to the show instead of on the stories and guests. They had a "Hall of Fame" that callers would compete to be in and there were recurring callers like "Dale the Cab Driver" and "Super Spurs Fan Steve" that would argue with each other and ate up all the air time. From the point that Duel got let go, there have been no mentions of the "Hall of Fame" and I haven't seen calls from most of the callers that used to be on at least every week.

Chris Duel had April Ancira and similar guests on his show all the time. I don't think it added much to his "sports" talk show. I have a feeling it had something to do with him being removed from the show.

Jason Minix wasn't on the show today so Dat was flying solo. All I can say is OMG! I can't imagine radio station higher ups listening to today's show and thinking "That's a good product we're putting out."

Wow

Wrong show. I was asking about the one that runs on Ticket from 2-4pm and is hosted by Calvin Casey and Rudy J.

Got it, thats not my commute window. I have heard them, a bit dull, I wouldn't listen if I was in the car at that time.

But it's got that diversity you were looking for in your first post above. Maybe it's time to admit that talent trumps diversity? Dat has the latter, but not the former. After a year behind the mic, it's looking like the talent thing is not developing for him, either.

despite the fact Dat can hardly put a sentence together, I actually thought he puts descent insight out there. I think Jason is very good at what he does and sort of balances out Dat's lack of communication skills. I have to say they are way better than that moron on 760 at the same time. For me, there are two types of sports talk guys: the guys that can't generate their own opinion but instead just recite old unintelligent sounding lines (jerry jones sucks), and they guys that actually develope their own opinions and can back them up. Jason and Dat fall into the second category for me.

I agree and there certainly isn't any shame in that. Emmitt Smith was a world class hall of fame football player and he proved that it doesn't automatically make you a broadcaster.
