We are outside of the Helotes city limits so I am not sure what their tax rates are, but I have heard they are pretty high! Just to give you an idea of what we pay, outside of the city limits of both Helotes and San Antonio, in 2007 our house was assessed at around $218,800 and we would have paid a little over $4,500 in taxes prior to our two exemptions (homestead and disabled vet, which knocked it down about $400).

2000 sq ft for $150K might be tough if you want a decent house; but I wouldn't limit myself to just those two schools as there are lots of great elementary schools in the area. Our kids go to Krueger and we couldn't be more impressed, especially considering my youngest is autistic and requires some help. We live in Wildhorse off of Braun just outside of 1604 and it is less than a 10 minute walk to their school. Plus, as I said, I have an easy commute to work but again I go in at 6:00am.

Overall, as I said, anything in the area I defined will be an NISD school and a fairly easy commute to Security Hill (as long as he leaves before 6:30, it gets tougher after that). Get a good realtor (we had a great one, if you are interested, PM me) and you shouldn't have any problem finding a nice place to live.

Cheers! M2

There are roughly 75 different subdivisions within a 7 miles radius north of US90 and either side of Loop 1604 so you have lots of choices regarding builders, price, lot size, ammenities, schools, shopping...etc.
