I'm doing some work in New Braunfels, and several folks I know have pronounced the town's name as if it was spelled "New Bronzefels". Is this an accepted pronunciation in the San Antonio area? Elsewhere in TX, it's not uncommon to pronounce things in a way that's different from what the spelling would indicate (Refugio, for example), so I didn't know if that was the case here.

Well, "Refugio" IS pronounced as it's spelled....in Spanish.

But, New Braunfels is "Brawn-fuls"<short "u"> There's no "s" after the "n", despite many folks trying to say it like there is.

Well, sort of true about the Spanish pronunciation of Refugio...except Anglos add the "r" sound. Anyway, will you get funny looks if you say "New Bronzefels"?

Nah - but you'll mark yourself as "der Outseiter" too lazy to bother to learn the proper pronunciation, and likely to offend some folks. Others will simply tune you out.

I do say it correctly, but some of the folks I work with use the other version.

I had close captioning on one day and the weather guy mentioned New Braunfels. It was captioned as New Brothels.

That's a tourist destination.

It sounds really ignorant to say "New Bronzefuls." It is not a difficult thing to say correctly. We used to have a weatherperson on the local news who wouldn't pronounce it properly and it drove me absolutely nuts. I couldn't believe they didn't correct her because she said it on almost every broadcast.

Unfortunately this is not correct.
There is no "u" in - fels. And none to pronounce. Yes, I noticed it - a common misconception on the web.
A German speaker wouldn't say it that way.
It's -fels like in "fellow".
Here is the correct pronunciation:

https://www.howtopronounce.com/new-braunfels/

Not the perfect phonetic, but closer than in post above:
nyoo BRAHN f’ls

And this ^^^ is just a LOL!
