I had a manufacturer's coupon for laundry soap in the amount of $2.00. There was an HEB store coupon for the product for $1.00 off at the shelf. The cashier said store policy was for one or the other, they don't "double" coupons. I went to Customer Service and she said the same thing. Are the (young) staff members misunderstanding, or am I?

My annoyance is because the coupons are separate. HEB is going to get reimbursed for the manufacturer's coupon, so they will not be out anything.

I am from the time where not allowing "double coupons" meant one of two things:

1. Only one manufacturer's coupon per item or

2. The face value of the coupon could not be doubled.

This policy of HEB's is news to me. Am I justified in being annoyed? Should I check with a manager?

Most HEB coupons are technically manufacturer's coupons. They usually have an "M" code at the bottom. Thus, the one per item limit.

It did not used to be that way, they would accept one HEB (yellow) and one manufacturer's coupon, as Target does.

Sadly, no one around here doubles coupons.

It's been some time since I was doing grocery shopping, but do miss the double coupon days other stores used to have.

Here is a site explaining what you can, and can't get away with at HEB:

I remember Kroger use to allow multiple coupons back when they were here.

Thanks to the three of you for your replies and links. I actually made a return (at a different HEB) of an item I had 2 coupons for but forgot to use when the cashier called me on the first item and Customer Service there also said the same thing, almost verbatim, about the store policy.
