Hi everyone/anyone,

I'm 30 years old and moving to San Antonio pretty soon. I was searching google for ideas about neighborhoods to live in, but I didn't really find anything useful. I've found out there really isn't a gay neigborhood, but I was hoping if anyone could tell me about neighborhoods that gay people in San Antonio favor...and are hopefully somewhat close to entertainment (bars, nightclubs, etc.) and has an urban feel.

Also, does anyone know how people usually find apartments? Do people generally use agents or just drive around and find apartments. A lot of websites (rent.com, apartments.com, etc.) seem to only suggest suburban apartment complexes...I can't imagine that's the only thing available in San Antonio.

Looking forward to moving to warm texas from cold massachusetts. Thanks in advance for any help!

Grab a copy of the SA Current, it will probably provide you with the most information you'll find anywhere...try looing through the adverts and classifieds.

As for downtown, I am not really sure there are a lot of apartments in that "urban" enviroment you are looking for. San Antonio is really spread out, and the downtown section is considerably small as compared to the suburbs, so this is why you are probably not seeing those types of apartments.

Cheers! M2

Surely you dont decide where youre going to live by how close it is to a bar??? Well, if you do than you will want to live near downtown off Main street somewhere. Near SAC. There are several trashy bars, a gay porn shop, and transvestite prostitutes on every corner.

I can't answer about the gay neighborhoods, because I simply don't know. I think you would feel welcome anywhere in San Antonio.

As far as an apartment locater, I think that is the smartest, most efficient way to go. Saves time, and gas, and often it will save you money since the locater know all the deals.

You would have loved the weather today!! It was glorious!

There is not a "gay neighborhood" in San Antonio like you might find in larger or more urban cities... like Dupont Circle in DC and Oak Lawn in Dallas. The closest we have to a "gay district" is a stretch of bars/nightclubs on Main Street near SAC (San Antonio College) just north of downtown. However, I think you might find the environment/vibe you're looking for in some of the downtown neighborhoods like Southtown/Blue Star/King William, SoFlo, and Lavaca. Most of these older/historic neighborhoods consist of renovated (and not so renovated!) homes, although there are a ton of new condos going up in warehouses in SoFlo. That said, I think you would be welcome and comfortable in just about any part of town... most of my gay friends actually live in the burbs in NW and Stone Oak (they're pretty much all settled down now). Welcome to SA!

I wouldn't say there was a specific gay neighborhood, but many of the older 'hoods are certainly more gay-friendly like Lavaca, Mahnacke Park, etc. And I'm convinced Friday night is gay night at Central Market (so many very attractive men in one place!)

There are apartment locators, but you need to emphasize what YOU want. Everyone I know who's used one has not been very happy with the outcome, mainly because they relied on the locator to find the place based on what the locator thought was best.

I'd stick with the downtown area. There are a ton of new lofts/rebuilt apartments in and around downtown that are wonderful.

San Antonio does have a vibrant, active gay community, but it's also a bit quiet - I know that sounds contradictory. I guess I should say the gay community isn't so obvious in town, and most living in the suburbs couldn't find it. But once in/near it (I'm not gay, but have enough friends who are), you find it's very active and alive.

i dontnknow where this sterotype that gay guys are more attractive than straight guys come from..or this idea that gay men have better taste. I think they usually have the Worst taste. Especially on televison, they always have some horrible looking queen giving fashion advice or putting down everyone elses outfits on the red carpet. For example the transvestite from Entertainment Tonight - Kojo or whatever the name is, or Karson from ***** Eye, who is suppose the be the "fashion" expert,...dont even get me sarted on Perez Hilton. You would think these guys telling everyone else what to wear would take thier own advice.
