Microsoft has a launch event at the Marriott Rivercenter on March 4th, for Server 2008...

Are there any other technical events or conferences going on? I like to attend as many as I can!

I'll be at the MS one and hopefully can get it counted as at least a half days work. I'm still going no matter what. Free Server 2008, SQL 2008, and VS 2008 is too good of a deal to pass up
I was actually looking for the price of Server 2008 when I found the Heroes thing. They sent my confirmation e-mail the other day and I'm also interested in good stuff like this, especially if it involves free software..

I've been out of the loop for a bit - I was working in the tech field as a gvmt contractor, but gave it up to run our businesses with my wife. Being a nerd, I miss it! But the wife lets me have my toys.

We're at the point where we need to server-centralize our business, and I was looking back into it.

I'm a lowly contractor right now.. Trying to justify a charge on the contract by saying it's to collect information for a possible upgrade. I personally think Server 2008 is going to be very sweet, especially with the built in VM. I'm going to start my own home server just to manage things and get some SQL practice in.

I've been looking at different server options. Right now, I think Windows Home Server will actually be the easiest option...

Have you tried it yet? I dl'd a beta of it a long time ago, but never installed it. I'd still go with 2008, mostly because it'll definitely handle what you throw at it and it'll be free.
I'm going to throw it on a cheapo dell 530S that I have in my kitchen, E4400 Core 2 Duo, 3 Gb's RAM, 250 Gb HD, wireless NIC, and a lowly ATI XT1300 because the case is a SFF and only holds half height cards.

I'll place this here since it's tech/geek related..

I found this new (to me) offer of free MS software for students: https://downloads.channel8.msdn.com/Products.aspx
Took a little bit of work and it seems to be getting hit pretty hard right now, but I like free stuff..

It says parents of students and faculty of a school are also elible. Now I'll have old and new versions of almost everything.
I had to e-mail in a screen shot of my courses because my school wasn't on the list. That list is pretty small too.. hopefully it doesn't take them long to approve it.

So was anyone else there? I was in the infrastructure tract sitting all the way in the back in the corner. There were way more people than I thought there would be and Server 2008 is pretty impressive. My only gripe is having to run 64-bit in order to run Hyper-V. I also noticed that Hyper-V looked REALLY similar to VMWare. Quite a few things looked really similar to other programs and applications. The full version of Vista Ultimate RC1 was a nice bonus too.

My only gripe was the seriously expensive Rivercity parking lot. That's not the way to get people to shop there...
