In several counties in NY and New Jersey the township gives away wood mulch, i had used it, but when it rains it does smell after time, my kids got tons of splinters from the wood. therefore we switched to mulch from rubbermulch web site. we love it

pobre - just wanting to know what happened with your rubber mulch experience? I am trying to decide whether or not to give it a try.

So far, so good. I only have it up front-in the bedding along the front of the house. It retained 100% of its color. Only drawback is that the oak leaves which have accumulated in certain place don't "blend", due to the colors. However, I could easily blow them out.

Overall, I'm quite pleased!!

Just wondering if the stray neighborhood cats would steer away from it or "use" it as much as they do the regular mulches. If anyone finds that cats won't do their business in it.....let me know and I'll get tons of it.

don't use it! i have tried it for two years and have ruined all. Not only does it make all black when it gets hot, but you ruin your clothes, shoes and plants.
The rubber won't do anything but ruin your expensive plants and hard work.
I ended up replacing everything I had worked so hard for and it cost me double the amount and the work!
Mulch is so great because it will breakdown and become great soil, rubber becomes, oil!
Take it from a person who HATES the spreading!!

I"m wondering about the smell? I cannot stand the smell of rubber. You that horrible smell when you go in to buy new tires? Does is smell like that around the bedding?

And how does it retain water. It seems it would get hot and add heat to the bedding, where normal mulch would absorb moisture and keep the soil and roots moist as well. Does it require more or less watering?

The mulch I used had/has no smell whatsoever. And I have not noticed a difference from when I had just regular mulch. I do use (good) landscaping fabric as well, for weed and water control.
