Eventually...but it's a good start at least. And a way to jump on the affordability problem that so many other cities are struggling with.

SAHA ecstatic after board green lights $486 million in affordable housing projects

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Housing Authority has received the green light by board members to proceed with 14 affordable housing projects valued at nearly half a billion dollars. Impact on downtown and the surrounding areas is expected to be substantial.

Other high-dollar SAHA projects approved as part of the $486 million package include:

-- St. John Square, a $65 million, eight-story, 252-unit apartment complex on S. St. Mary's and East Nueva streets.

-- Culebra Crossing, a $47 million, 326-unit multi-family development at Culebra and Loop 1604.

-- Alazan Courts, a $44 million, 328-unit project on various lots.

"I’m excited about all of them," Nisivoccia says. "It’s like asking a parent who's your favorite child."

The remaining projects are:

-- Artisan at Ruiz, 102 units in a $21 million development.

-- Mira Vista Apartments, 300 units in an $18 million development at 1226 Mira Vista Drive.

-- Kitty Hawk Flats, 240 units in a $28 million project at Kitty Hawk and O'Connor Road.

-- Traders Flats, a 324-unit, $38 million multi-family project at 8671 S.W. Loop 410.

-- 1604 Flats, 330 units in a $38 million multi-family project near I-10 East and Loop 1604.

-- Old Pearsall Flats, a 345-unit, $41 million project at 9326 S.W. Loop 410.

-- Charity at Springview Apartments, $20 million for 250 units on the East side.

-- Champion at Del Rio, Champion at Marshall Meadow and Champion at Port Royal - all Vesta Corporation acquisitions - for a total of $42.6 million for 682 units. Del Rio is located at 927 VFW Blvd., Marshall Meadow is at 1803 Marshall Cross and Port Royal is at 5350 W. Military Dr.

"I’m excited about all of them," Nisivoccia says. "It’s like asking a parent who's your favorite child."

If all the projects get built, he estimates there will be in excess of 10,000 new affordable housing units available to local renters.

So how long until there's some NIMBY folks coming out against these moves?

Nothing wrong with being NIMBY about it. These projects typically are cheaply built and run down in 5 years. Hopefully none will be open by the time I retire in 3 years and GTHO.

The downtowners paying $450k for their 2 bedroom bungalows with granite countertops and hardwood floors are probably puckered up ( and not for a kiss, I mean their butts are likely puckered) but it's not politically correct for them to say so. This should be interesting.

Not any more. ABQ Housing built a bunch of these when I lived in ABQ. Very nice places, construction in line with any other apartment complex, and they are definitely a step above what was on the various lots and neighborhoods prior to the construction. Bravo SAHA!

What would be great in San Antonio is what we have up in Austin, which is housing that provides units to very low to moderate/low median income individuals. There are units for people who make under 30% of AMI, people between 50%-70% and then a small chunk for those making up to 80% of the AMI. I have met several people that makes that 80% (or maybe 75% to 80% of AMI) and have been able to get in on units that are in prime locations (east Austin and Domain to be specific). If that was available in San Antonio those more central units might attract more of the 70-80% income families/individuals.

We will just have to work harder. People utilizing these low cost units depend on us to do so so it can be paid for.

As a downtown resident, I am far from puckered. People move downtown for a certain lifestyle, and mixed socioeconomics is one of them. You really are a piece.

Why are you so negative? You seem to be very "puckered."

I made it through without name-calling. Did you? Nope. You keep responding like a puckered up person would, though. Thou doth protest too much.

It's a cycle, move in, move out. It's not going to stop just because "you" love and embrace and welcome socioeconomic diversity. And if "you" want to stay or move, that's up to "you."

There were other "negative " posts prior to mine anyway. I'd say they were more negative than mine.
