I am hard of hearing and wear a cochlear implant. I read lips. I have an associate degree in Business Technology. I am a data entry operator. I am currently working but the work is slow. I'm looking for a fast paced job. The only thing that I can't do is to answer the phones like doing a customer service but I can communicate through the emails with the clients. I am making $13.50 an hour. I am interested in good paying job and would like to work along with other deaf/hard of hearing employees but that is an option. I communicate with hearing people as well. I know very little sign language but I always want to learn more of it. Where I can apply for a good job or a change of career? I like to work with hands like doing production, filing, data entry, scanning, and data conversion. In addition, I have been told that I am an excellent proofreader. I live in north of stone oak area.

I'm not aware of any place in San Antonio that actively recruits deaf/hard of hearing employees. You have a degree, yet it sounds like you are stuck in a entry level position. Based upon what you would like to do, I would try Rackspace, Harcourt and the Univ. of TX Health Science Center. If you have good vocabulary & proof reading skills, maybe a position as an report writer? What about as a paralegal or other position where attention to detail is needed? Have you considered trying an employment agency?

My son has a cochlear implant & was educated orally. He was mainstreamed by 2nd grade and knows no sign language. He too has been told that he is a good proofreader. He received a perfect score on the critical reading portion of his SATs & is still a student

I have a suggestion for you. Why can't you go forward and contact TRC (Texas Rehabilitation Center). The counselor will help you with a case that you need. The TRC will help you with transportation, employment advisor, training, etc.
