We are coming to San Antonio for 2 nights in December to go to the Alamo at least one of the days, then maybe do some exploring/hiking/walking if possible. Anybody got an idea of what is a good place for us to stay? We'd like to check out Big Lou's Pizza too if possible, saw that on TV and looked good. Then obviously some Tex Mex.

Kids are old enough to walk around.

Big Lou's just because it was on TV?

Much, much better pizza options in SA. I'd look elsewhere.

I dunno…if I were coming from out of town, it’d be fun to take the kids to get one of those 42” pizzas. Be a fun family thing…place was on TV, huge pie…good memories.

You're in the heart of Tex-Mex country....and ya want Big Lou's?? <G> Personally, I'd do Mi Tierra (IMO, their food is so-so at best, but it's a landmark known around the country). Then perhaps El Chaparral <sp> in Helotes. From there, you REALLY need to head for Kerrville & Fredericksburg, arriving shortly after dusk - both cities go all-out for Christmas decorations, and there's usually events in the Fredericksburg main plaza with Christmas themes.
The SA Riverwalk IS beautiful with their lights, but it gets crowded & loud, in my experience.

Don't blame the guy. With kids, gotta have pizza at least once. Its just easier and better on the pocket book versus other types of restaurants.

OP, I know you're already booked but for others, Drury Plaza downtown treated us pretty well over the summer. Nice apartment type room with sofabed and great views from the 17th floor, big plus for families is that they treat you to both breakfast and a decent unlimited dinner. For us it was pulled port sandwiches, hotdogs, soups, salad and a bunch of sides. It was a nice little staycation for us.

Went with Hilton Garden Inn. Everything seemed right there, so just took a pick I guess.

Thanks for the suggestions on Tex Mex and Christmas lights, will certainly check those out if possible.

For tex mex I would recommend Eddie’s taco house or taco haven for breakfast tacos. For dinner you can’t beat la Fonda on main (best fajitas I’ve had at a restaurant). All these places are close to downtown.

for outside and nearby SA, I like to keep an eye on this event portal

Hill Country Lighting Trail, is a very nice loop
https://www.tripsavvy.com/texas-hill...-trail-1656925
Boerne, Bandera, Comfort, Kerrville, Fredericksburg*, Luckenback, Johnson City*, Dripping Springs, Austin, San Marcos, New Braunfels, and back to SA... ~4-5 hrs with a few ways to shorten.
* = Not to miss towns for Christmas Lighting and events. Fredericksburg lighted parade is a dandy! (2 Dec 2022 6:30pm)

jC has free hay wagon rides around town and great tours of Johnson house (on select dates)

Lots of great Tex-Mex, I tend to avoid the downtown stuff (large cafes), but plenty of smaller places around town.

Since I am often at the airport, I frequent Ruthie's, (11423 W Ave) especially for the variety and low cost of Breakfast tacos (~$2). Super Taco ($3.50) and Grande Burrito ($9) are very excellent and big portions for meals.

Mission Trail is good for keeping the kids walking.
