My friend works at A Woman's Choice... which does accept Medicare. I can't evaluate any of the other practitioners there, but my friend is very kind, caring, and would only give positive advice to a pregnant mom regardless of their age - she does not judge, she just tries to give the best care possible.

They're at 920 San Pedro - not sure if that's close to you or not as I'm fairly new in town - but I've linked to their website. Good luck to her whoever she finds - and good for you for being her advocate and helping her understand that she doesn't need to feel belittled when she goes in for prenatal care! I hope she gets the care she deserves regardless of where she ends up going.

They also offer 3-d ultrasounds at "Baby Debut" next door, just FYI

As far as transportation goes, aren't there services affiliated with Medicaid and other programs that give people rides to medical appointments? When I was a young mom on Medicaid I was also part of a program just for single, pregnant women. Something like Baby Care or Any Baby Can ... not sure of the exact name! But it provided more than just the medical, it was extra services as well. Except the thing that I found crazy, is that I signed up before I got married - but was getting married in a few months. My case worker told me not to report my marriage because I'd lose the services! So you get more help being young and single and poor than you do if you chose to get married! We turned in the change of name papers after my daughter was born, and like I said - this was suggested BY my case worker. Crazy world.

Totally not the same thing, but this just reminded me of my experience when a newly pregnant 36 yo - every freaking time I went to the OB's office (which was a lot at first, as I'd had a prior m/c and she was worried I might be high risk so wanted to follow closely - I wasn't), the nurse would see my age and gasp and say "Agh?! 36?! You realize you're high risk? You must do XYZ. Have you been referred to a specialist yet?"

First time wasn't such a big deal, after the 5th time, I wanted to scream - "Are you trying to freak me out?!!!" As it turns out I was low risk, apart from age.

Most nurses are wonderful, some are just clueless.

Haha, my sister is going through the same thing right now. She's tired of hearing she's 'old' and 'high risk'. She'll be 37 in a couple of weeks and is due in October.

I was very happy to go back to my midwife who took my age in stride... I think around here people are too used to women my age becoming grandmothers. My mom was 35 when she had me (tho I was her 7th), so I didn't think much of it.

Unfortunately I *am* high risk now, but only for ectopic, having had one already. Once we get past the initial stages, I can go back to being low risk, hopefully

Congrats to your sister!

I can recommend Riverwalk OBGYN, my doctor is Michael Jones, and he has delivered my 10 yr old daughter and my 1 year old twins. He has an office downtown at the Nix and in Stone Oak. The practice has many doctors, some who are female, and they do take Medicaid, among other insurances. I have always had a wonderful experience there. (I got the old,"advanced maternal age" thing too) I am 38.

I agree that midwives tend to be a lot more "laid back" about mamas who are 35+. If this young girls is open to natural childbirth etc.- a midwife may be the way to go.

I can't recommend any OB/GYN's since I've only used midwives.... I just hope she finds the respect and compassion that she (and every mom) deserves. Please keep us posted on how she's doing!

And fierce_flawless, bless your heart for offering to give her a lift to her appts. She is lucky to have such a great friend....

Transportation to and from appointments are part of the Medicaid program. I believe there is a phone number where someone can call to arrange for pickup. The caseworker should have that info.

Here's another recommendation for Lone Star OBGYN, although I don't know Dr. Kuhl. My doctor is Michelle Cerny-Leecock, and she's wonderful.
