A man who lost his hand after a vicious backyard dog attack died, according to the Medical Examiner.
Paul Anthony Striegl, 47, was brutally attacked last month by his neighbor’s dogs in his own yard on Heidelberg Street on the Northeast Side. He suffered severe injuries in both his arms and torso.
According to Animal Care Services officer Merian Martinez, Striegl lost his left hand and sustained injuries on his right arm, chest, and stomach, where pieces of flesh were detached from his midsection.

Two dogs were involved in the attack: A male pit bull named Ghost and a female pit bull named Venus, who escaped a fence.

SAPD’s Homicide Unit conducted a thorough investigation and no further criminal charges are expected.

These pit pull attack stories are starting to become quite common in SA.

Pit bulls are killing machines. I don’t know what the solution is but something needs to be done.

For every pit bull attack story, there are at least 10 personal claims how sweet and what a big baby they are in their own homes.

My sister had a female pit bull years ago and I refused to visit her house until the day she had to give it up because it was attacking her other dogs. She actually had to put it to sleep because they are difficult to adopt out and no one would take it. She was very attached to it and it was her big baby but she will never get another one again.

Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population, but they’re responsible for 68% of dog attacks and 52% of dog-related deaths since 1982, according to research compiled by Merritt Clifton, editor of Animals 24-7, an animal-news organization that focuses on humane work and animal-cruelty prevention.

Assuming that stat is accurate that is super concerning.

That this keeps happening in this city and that the city is soft on owners is pretty redneck. Reminds me of how they've treated DUIs (for decades).

The city needs to make this a priority.

You can't control your dog and it causes harm, you're going to jail.

What does SA do differently regarding DWIs?

They do nothing differently at this point, even after the EN ran a damning article about how many people can seemingly rack up with no real punishment.

The DAs in this city have been lazy on that. It's absolutely ridiculous.

How is it possible that "no further criminal charges"? Dogs murdered this poor guy. The owners are responsible.

I had a friend with a pit and I wouldn't visit her until she got rid of it.
