An outsider to TX, I always did kind of like the "Don't Mess With Texas" thing. Kind of cute. But recently, while driving I-10 in the middle of West Texas, I kept seeing these signs that read "Drive Friendly." Not to be nit-picky, but to me these signs brought to the surface a negative Texas stereotype. Can anyone guess what the problem was?

Um, is it that Texas drivers drive like a-holes? That is my number one pet peeve with people in Texas. Okay, not everyone, but a great deal of them. They tailgate, speed up when they see you need to change lanes or get onto the freeway, cut in front of you really close, pace each other really slow on two lane highways/freeways, etc. Coming from California I have always heard people refer to CA drivers as "crazy" but they aint got nothing on these Texas drivers! In over 20 years of driving I have never seen so many bad drivers in such a short (3 month) period of time as I have in Texas. Give me a CA driver any day of the week! Maybe whoever put up the Drive Friendly signs was talking to Texas drivers. They have to be - all of us non-Texans DO drive friendly!!!

Hi there,
I agree with everything you say about TX drivers, but I was referring to the fact that the word "friendly" (an adjective) cannot be used to modify "drive" (a verb). One would need an ADVERB. It's grammatically incorrect hick speak to say "Drive Friendly," which is not a problem in an informal context, but what scares me is that this signage campaign made it past some presumably educated officials somewhere--through conception, approval, design, posting, etc., and obviously nobody caught it. That is one scary fact that speaks volumes. Also, none of the local people posting on this site caught it either, it seems. Third grade grammar, people. You can say "Drive carefully," etc., but you can not say "Drive friendly." That's so Beverly Hillbillies that I'm going to have to sign off now and make a cup of hot chocolate to calm myself down.

I believe the "friendly" came from the friendship campaign. The word texas came from tejas that meant friends. I remember signs from the early to mid nineties that said "drive friendly-the Texas way"

I was not born here in USA, but I learned English from school. I don't find "Drive friendly" to be grammatically wrong... drive friendly, drive safely, they are all correct...
