Does anyone know what Grissom Road was like around 1986? I have a vague memory of driving around that area at the time. I stopped at a gas station which was like the only thing around for miles it seemed like. The only other thing was the entry roads to a couple of neighborhoods maybe. (I was driving along Grissom recently and it was really built up with businesses and buildings.)

Does that sound like Grissom road at the time?

I remember Grissom Rd from back in the mid 70's as a little kid having to take the bus down Grissom to Leon Valley Elem. when it was in the old location at the corner of Grissom and Bandera Rd. There wasn't much on the road back then as really none of the neighborhoods further down Grissom towards Culebra were even built yet. No HEB, no retail, no homes...just lots of empty farm land. By the mid 80s though, it was pretty much built up especially further down toward Culebra where The Great Northwest and other neighborhoods were already built. So much development and new homes had sprung up by then that Northside ISD had to open Taft High School by 1986 to relieve Marshall High School which used to cover the Taft zone.

I remember reading something on here stating that San Antonio really didn't grow in the 1980's. Well, it grew on the northwest side especially off Culebra and FM 471 and really hasn't ever stopped expanding outward twenty years later.

Actually I went out there again today and I found the area that I remembered. It's the part of Culebra Road beyond the point at which Grissom turns into Culebra. It still looks pretty much the same as I remembered it.

I don't think Grissom Road has changed much over the years. The corner of Bandera and Grissom used to have an Exxon station years ago, but that's been closed for many years. All of the mechanic shops and storage places have always been there. The Valero station used to be a Stop n Go, and the store across the street from the Valero used to be a Coastal gas station. Honestly, there hasn't been much else that has changed.

Default Sure I remember,

I can remember Grissom rd all the wau back to the seventies.
But I remember it all vividly. There was quite a bit out there compared
to the seventies. There past Tezel rd there were churches, gas stations,
and a seven eleven on the corner of les harrison.
When I was a teenager there was absolutely nothing out there.
Only the gas atations at 1604 and 471 , one about half way to Medina.
It was a beautiful place back then, rural and unspoiled.
Way back when there was a back entrance to the HUGE gravel pit
where Ingram mall now sits, along with the subdivisions that cover that ground.
By the eighties the area was quite developed, really , lots of subdivisions.

There used to be a gas station (probably a Diamond Shamrock) with a store that was open on two sides (kind of like some of the Tetco stations are today). But I think that's gone or been replaced.

Sorry. The one I'm thinking of was on Culebra between Grissom and 1604.
