Same thing happened to me while I was in an airport waiting for my flight back to SA. Our client was flying back to Dallas but we had some time to kill. We had never really had a prior opportunity to just talk about things besides the project, and we began to talk about where each of us was from (I'm from SA). He noted that he was also originally from SA and then asked...wait... "what high school did you go to?" My co-worker (from another state) just sat there with this confused look on his face. I guess it is a San Antonio thing.

I had a lunch job interview yesterday with the director of a foster care placement agency in Boerne. I had no intention of learning anything about her personal background, but she asked me about my background and I'm young, 24, and just happened to say "well I grew up around 1604 and 10 (we were at The Olive Garden at 1604 and 10) and went to so and so college and Clark..." and she smiled and said "Well I won't hold it against you..but my sons graduated from Churchill...a longtime ago..." I was like 'I care because?" lol. It is a San Antonio thing! You really can place a neighborhood based on a high school.

No joke. [And it makes me look hip at the same time!]

It MUST be a San Antonio thing. I get asked "where did you go to school" frequently. The first time I was confused and said "Uh, Trinity..." and they said "Nooooo, silly, HIGH school...." When I said I grew up in Austin and Boulder, they looked at me like a carpetbagger! So now I just say I didn't grow up here, but I got here as fast as I could!

Mexicans on the South and West Side.
Blacks on the East and NE side and Whites on the North and NW side.

White High Schools, Alamo Heights, Clark and Churchill.

What?? You don't carry the switch-blades anymore? What kind of Pachuco are you? When I was a kid only the east siders carried guns. Us southsiders could only afford bicycle chains, The north siders only had lawyers.

I don't like it when folks ask me what high school I went to. It makes it seem like that's the only accomplishment someone can make. I don't mind telling them, it's just one of those little annoyances I have I guess. So I just rattle off the schools I went to : Memorial High School, St. Philip's College, Palo Alto College, Texas A&M Kingsville. The next remark is a surprised "You went to college?"

Anyway, no. I cannot say that I have had any comments about where I live (NW Military between 410 and 1604).

I have however heard negative comments, or perceived negative comments, about other parts of SA from people, the news, the paper etc.
