In San Antonio this weekend and would like to know what is the one restaurant that one can't leave without going to. Also, where is the best place downtown to get a drink?

I love Rosario's in Southtown for the Mexican food, and it's a great place to hang out and have a margarita, especially Friday nights when they have a salsa band. My favorite place nearer the riverwalk for a drink is Swigs, the martinis are great and the location can't be beat!

If you can, you should try going somewhere outside of DT. Off the top of my head I would suggest Henry's Puffy Tacos, Karam's or Don Pedros. Stay away from Pappasito's as it is more of a chain type of restaurant. Chachos is okay, but you'd be just as well off going to Taco Cabana. Rosario's is alright, but it is more of traditional Mexican food with a twist, rather than Tex Mex.

La Fonda on Main Avenue is fantastic. Paloma de blanca in Alamo Heights is well amazing their are no other words. That's where we always take out of towners to eat at least once.

As a newcomer, I agree with smu... La Fonda is awesome. We took our daughter and a friend there three weeks ago. The food was delicious and authentic. Our waiter was the nicest person I have been around here so far. Even the manager came over, shook our hands, thanked us for choosing to eat there, and gave us free dessert. What more can you ask for?

Interesting opinions. Rosario's is the best in my opinion. Great seasonings and drinks that actually have alcohol in them (never to be taken for granted). Rosario's is a bit loud, however. Better atmosphere at La Fonda on Main, but I found their food to be pretty bad. The taquitos were literally unedible--rolled up cardboard. Their drinks were good, though.

Am I crazy or is Marguarita's downtown pretty good! I love the food there - very Tex-Mex. Not far from the Riverwalk.

Avoid Picante Grill on Broadway. I know it gets good reviews but blech. I gave them several chances, too... and their fajita meat was tough and veiny, they give you this TINY bowl of chips (enough for one person when you have a party of six), and they are forever short-handed.

My favorites:

Salsalito (on Nacogdoches)

Tomatillo's (broadway)... love their Sangria Margarita!!!

Betos'

Now I'm hungry!

I love San Antonio -- but this topic has begged me to ask the question, why does everyone recommend Mi Tierra restaurant? I have been there twice and I think there are many better restaurants in the city..... did I show up at bad times?

Or what am I supposed to order -- I had enchiladas and chalupas..
