I know the smart thing would be to move to Austin but I have a 16 year old and don't want to disrupt anything for his high school years. Does anyone have some good advice about commuting from near Garden Ridge to Round Rock. They offer morning, afternoon and evening classes.

gosh.....traffic to Austin is getting to be bad at all hours. When do you start? Can you try some trial runs to see which is better? If it were this side of Austin, then you'd be ok, but you almost add another 45 mins just to get to Round Rock where everyone is coming and going. If you don't mind driving late, the evening class might be your best bet....depending on what time it starts. Good luck!

Look into a hotel... you'll probably save on gas and wear on the car. As a bonus, you'll also get to keep your sanity.

For me, it would be more pleasurable to deal with any fallout from a 16 year old rather than battling that traffic.

Well, if you have a truck or SUV and would like a side business, there are probably plenty of people here who would pay you to bring back stuff from Ikea!

Good luck, tho. We were just up that way this past weekend, and it was a bear.

That sounds like an absolutely miserable commute. If gas prices were to go back over $3/gallon, you could find it to be prohibitively expensive, too. City-Data's mileage tool could help you figure out exactly how much that trip costs depending on fuel prices.

My advice would be to wait until the 16yo is done with school to start your Round Rock schooling and look into whether there might be some similar courses at another school that you could take online or locally and transfer the credits to Round Rock.

Take the new SH 130 toll road around the east side of Austin. It'll cost you a little (about $3 each way), but the time you save will be worth it. Get a TxTag; it'll be a little cheaper and you don't have to stop at the toll booths.
