Does anyone who works on Ft Sam know what this building is/was? I'm including a Virtual Earth aerial link to it (if it works). It is within the Post boundaries and can only be accessed from inside the post. It's geographical location puts it just east of the old Playland Park property and west of the post veterinarian's complex. The closest streets are Josephine on the south, Alamo on the west, and Cunningham on the north.

From the aerial, it looks new because of the roof, but I believe this is a very old building.

Normally, it is discouraged from answering questions about base facilities due to the heightened security concerns/measures that have been in place since 9/11; but if you are talking about the house in the middle of the image I will check it out this afternoon as we are heading over to Ft Sam to do some Christmas shopping and let you know if I find anything out via a DM.

Cheers! M2

I thought about that....but I'm really more interested in finding out the historical info on it. It looks like it might have even been a post commanders house at one time....as in more of a residential design than official use.

I might need to go back to the Post Museum and talk to the Post Historian.
BTW - if you pan to the north of this building a little (across the creek/acequia) there is a little structure that looks like a small chapel. You can see it very clearly from Cunningham. It was originally an ammunition magazine according to the PH. That whole little pasture is now a pet cemetery. You can see some headstones scattered about the field.

Also...if you go up Cunningham right up to the gate (Unfortunately I think it's now permanently closed)....you can see through the fence on the right the grave of "Pat" the horse. There's a great story about him. I'll have to find it and post it. He was a service horse and much beloved. He was put out to pasture in that area when he "retired". He saw some glory years in his equine existence!

Thanks in advance for any info! I'll look for your DM!

I just looked back at the image. "Pats" grave is at the intersection of Cunningham and N.Pine (where Cunningham becomes Wilson). You would miss it if you went all the way to the gate. Now if you're on Post, you may be able to drive to N Pine and walk over to it.....that is if you're interested in it at all. Your kids might find it interesting to see how the Army revered such an animal.

Not sure how tight security is these days.

I checked it out this afternoon, the answer is not as interesting as you may have hoped but I am still DM'ing it to you as it is still something I don't want to publish on an open forum.

And if you want to get on Ft Sam, let me know, I'll take you on there if you really want to go...

Cheers! M2
