Does anyone know why, in particular, that sooooooo many birds congregate right there at sunup and sundown. I have never seen so many birds in my life. It seriously looks like an Alfred Hitchcock movie

I'm not sure why the pick certain areas, but this is not unique to San Antonio. I've seen this behavior from OK City, Dallas, Waco, Austin and several places in SA. For some reason they like parking lots and mall areas with lots of asphalt or concrete and just enough trees to load up. Downtown has implemented several plans to rid the area of them...ie netting trees, fire crackers at dusk, spotlights....not sure what has been the best help. It gets nasty on the ground around these areas. I've heard they are just resting as they migrate. I suppose they leave word for the next round where the best accommodations are! Best news is that it's seasonal and they will move on!

Culebra/Tezel/Grissom is another creepy spot. Keep your windows closed, because the noise is terrifying. One or two of something is great, thousands of 'em is just wrong.

We have wondered this for years...it is not a new problem.

We have found thru observations, that it seems to be those "corners" with multiple fast food "smells" and locations that they get together. Could have something to do with the smell of food, not to metion the dropped/discarded items that are available for consumption. Check out any "fastfood corner", especially at sunset.

the HEB parking lot on De Zavala had this problem as well --- creepy...and not so fun to run to your car, throw your groceries in the trunk and dive into the drivers seat before getting bombed...

The parking lots at the interchanges around North Star Mall get their share of these grackles, too.

My best guess is they are drawn to the parking lots and streets because of the radiant heat given off by asphalt and would prefer to roost there overnight when compared to open country side which can be considerably cooler at night. Possibly as much as 10 degrees.

What ever it is, I find it to be pretty annoying.
