My husband and i are considering a move to Texas. We are interested in either Austin, Dallas or San Antonio. We are city people in general, although we own a car but would like to live somewhere in Texas that has decent public transportation as well, so which of the 3 is better for public transportation?. We'd also like to know where would be a better place to live in general between the 3 places i mentioned. We are in our mid 30's, artsy, spiritually diverse and open minded, like the city life, but also like landscape. Somewhere reasonably priced house and apartment wise. Would also like a place that is easily accessible to things of interests, movies, restaurants etc. My husband works in the IT business so somewhere that the market is good for that as well. And lastly, a good place to raise children. We don't have any yet, but will in the next few years or so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We're good for the IT guru, Rackspace & USAA are always hiring (I think?) but as fara s public transporation, if that's what your big selling point is then I would pass on San Antonio.

San Antonio's public transportation is among the worst in the country for a city.

you sound like Austin people, so go check it out. The only thing is that Austin has more expensive housing.

Also, never let your husband apply at USAA if you do come to SA.

You're best bets for what you're looking for would be Houston and Austin, especially for the artsy, diverse characteristics. I'd pick Dallas third and SA last.

San Antonio not artsy? Two historic arts districts downtown, one of the largest theatre districts in the U.S. 5 restored vaudeville theatres. The arts scene is growing big time in S.A.
Love it when people don't have a clue yet think they know it all!!!

#1. Public transportation: Austin (but only if you live close to downtown, which brings us to #2)
#2. Affordable housing: Definitely NOT Austin, and definitely not close to town, unfortunately
#3. Arts: I actually think that SA has quite a bit of an eclectic feel downtown. It is definitely unique downtown, IMO.

I've lived in Houston, Austin and San Antonio. I've spent a lot of time in Dallas/Ft. Worth.

Without any second guessing, I would take Austin or SA over the others. Great culture, food, friendly people. Austin and SA are a few hours from the beach and both are on the edge of the Hill Country.

The cost of living is higher in Austin, but it is dirt cheap compared to LA, Seattle, San Fran, Boston, Chicago or NYC.

In defense of Houston and DFW, both are cool places. Houston is just way too freaking big. And the hair is too big in DFW... don't they know the 1980's are over??? But, if you like getting dressed up just to go to the Olive Garden, then DFW may be right for you.

So there.
