I was brought up the same way. I actually started shifting gears for my dad when I was very young and by 11 or so I was driving. My first lesson was going up and down the incline of our driveway in a 1981 Corolla with a manual transmission. That taught me the clutch and probably wore out the clutch quite a bit
my dad taught me all the driving, though, and I consider that the more traditional dad role.
