Why 6? Why not 7, 8, 9 or 10?

Many countries celebrate January 6th as Three King’s Day, celebrating the day Melchor, Gaspar, and Balthazar visited Jesus as a child bringing gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

According to many historians, the well-known twelve days of Christmas actually represent the twelve days between December 25th and January 6th, not the twelve days before Christmas. In the past, these days were celebrated with gift giving feasts with January 6th serving as the Twelfth Night, made popular by William Shakespeare’s play.

Some traditions are still carried out around the world with Christmas decorations being taken down on the 6th in the United Kingdom (some think it’s unlucky to do so earlier)

In Spain, the Philippines, and certain parts of Latin America, El Día de los Reyes (The Day of the Kings) is celebrated with children leaving shoes out overnight to collect gifts from the Kings and sweets, drink, and hay as a gift for the Kings and their camels. ( actually they do it in Germany and Poland too)

In the Netherlands and Belgium, the day is known as Drie Koeningen (Three King’s Day). Three children dress in costume to represent the three kings and visit houses singing songs, receiving sweets or coins from each door. German & Polish children also visit houses singing songs dressed as the three kings, but leave behind the initials of the three kings(M+G+B) above the door frames to bless the family for the new year.

Nick...Nina is correct. On a local level, most Roman Catholic churches and Episcopal churches in San Antonio regard "Epiphany" as a Holy Day on the church calendar. A Holy Day being "required" to attend mass or the Eucharist by the church. Because it falls on Weds this year, I think the Catholic churches hold the Epiphany Mass on the Sunday before the 6th. (Someone that is RC can probably help with that.) The Episcopal church calendar shows it remaining on Wednesday. Carols are generally part of the services through Epiphany, and many "catholics" keep decorations, tree and all up through Epiphany.

There are other churches in the US that also recognize Epiphany such as some Greek Orthodox churches. I don't know their traditions however.

I saw a bunch of King's Day cakes on clearance at Wal-Mart the other day. Someone must have overestimated the extent to which that holiday is celebrated here.

My sister-in-law, who lives in Spain, claims that King's Day cakes taste like hamburger buns with a little bit of candied fruit sprinkled on top. That doesn't sound like much of a treat to me!

I myself celebrate X-mas that way. We put on the Christmas tree on Christmas eve, and take it down day after Jan. 6th
Gifts are given on X-Mas eve after the dinner, dinner is around 7 PM ( it should be with the first visible star on the sky), most of my country people prepare 12 dishes. No meat.
One extra plate for " someone who might knock on the door" is on the table.
Then we go to church at midnight.

you also have Orthodox Christmas, which is tomorrow. Holidays: Orthodox Christmas Day in United States
When I was learning Serbo-Croatian we had Christmas issues because the school and the Croats (Catholics) celebrate traditional Christian Christmas. The Bosnians (Muslims) don't do Christmas at all and the Serbs (eastern Orthodox) do Orthodox Christmas. Luckily, the school was on an Army base, so traditional Christmas prevailed
