We are a small town family that will be relocated to San Antonio this summer. We will only be flown over one time to look for places to stay.

We were looking in the 78258 zip code. Is this a good area for neighborhoods with children around 11&12? Any suggestions about schools?

I've read some posts about traffic - does this compare to the DC area?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

78258 puts you right next to US 281, which has the worst traffic in San Antonio during rush hour. The schools are fine there, but the farther north you live in 78258, the longer and slower the commute will be. 281 may eventually be made into a toll road in 78258. That's a controversial topic here that you can research elsewhere in the forum.

78258's a good part of town to live in for commerce. If 78258 fits your price point, let me suggest you also look at 78216, 78232 and 78248, which are south of 78258 and inside Loop 1604. Those zips have similarly good schools, access to all of the commerce in 78258 and much less traffic for the commute.

Traffic is NOTHING compared to DC area. We moved here from Maryland in 2004 and I thought wow, 45 minutes to actually go somewhere 45 minutes away. Commute time is much better here than there. I remember having to drive an hour and a half to and from just to go to a spot 15 miles away! So traffic wise you're fine. Road rage is about the same. Yield signs are backwards so that takes some getting used to and most people here don't actually yield so you'll have to be careful with that.

Not sure about the 78258 zipcode but I'm sure you'll get plenty of assistance!

Default North Central San Antonio Neighborhoods

The 78258 is great place to raise your kids. The schools are the best in the city, NEISD, just make sure you stay west of 281 due to the traffic. We have been in the neighborhood over 13 years and although there is traffic it is well worth it. Make sure you know which schools your children will be attending before you purchase a home. The school boundaries can be a little tricky...good luck!!

Do check out 78248. The homes might be a little bit older (like 5-20 yeas old... so not OLD) but the neighborhoods are more established. Excellent schools and the location cannot be beat, IMO

Check out the Quarry at Iron Mountain - off of Sonterra BLVD and Hardy Oak - near the new Methodist hospital. Great homes on 1/4 acre homesites. DM me for more information. One of the easiest areas to get into and out of in the 78258 zip code. Wonderful high quality and spacious homes. We have lived here since June of 2008 and love it.
