To follow-up, my reasoning was two-fold:

1. I needed a bit more design-work pruning done, not just chopping down trees. If all the latter I may have considered a much cheaper route.

2. Selfish concern - I didn't want someone unlicensed and uninsured climbing 30ft up with a chainsaw on my property. I of course don't want to see anyone else get hurt, but I also don't want the emotional trauma of seeing that, as well as the legal responsibility should the worst happen. Not long ago a house in our 'hood fell on top of a worker doing the foundation. Worker was killed. Contractor who hired the worker was unlicensed. Big legal mess. Not long after we did our trees, a neighbor had a "guy with a chainsaw" and I watched him almost fall. Fortunately he was fine, caught himself ok, but it traumatized me enough....
