I am trying to transfer two children into this school district since the hubby is active army, and Converse elementary is terrible, but the application process is anything but smooth sailing... The people who handle the process are curt, abrupt and almost dismissive. This isn't an elite school, so why the rude demeanor? Maybe I'm paranoid...

I have no idea what their problems are. My daughter and I went to watch her son at a theater competition. We were rudely treated by both the military and school personnel.

They have an overblown opinion of themselves. Perhaps the fact that there is too much rank and not enough leadership is the reason.

I'm not understanding who you are talking about. The school administration? Or the military department that oversees educational needs for on base students?

We lived ON Randolph in the dark ages....and attended all three schools (well jr high and high school were together). It really is sort of like a private school because it's very small and everyone knows each other. Transitioning to public school was tougher than we thought it would be. It's a very close knit community on base....but when the numbers drop for student enrollment, they are allowing off base students to attend. It just might be that "new kid" type mentality like a small town might feel.

Otherwise, living on base now may have a whole other feel that has evolved in the last 8 years....tightened security and all. What was it that MajorMMM said? Maybe everyone has "situational awareness syndrome".

OH...and I just read that you are Army....and surely you know about the branch rivalry. I think the Navy guys call the AF the Air Force Pukes and so on.....but overall I'm sure they'll get past that competitive nature eventually.

Check into St. Monica's Catholic school in Converse if you are unhappy with Converse Elementary and Randolph ISD.

St Monicas is a very nice school, lots of activities and the curriculum seemed very challenging. I looked into the school last year when we lived in the area. The only "vibe" I got was from some of the parents I had the pleasure of running into - they seemed kinda "snooty," to put it nicely.

I attended St. Monica's back in the 80s. It consisted of mostly middle class families, nothing snooty from what I remember. Things might have changed since then.

Brenda thinks they're pretty special: Randolph Field ISD

I work at Randolph and have heard nothing but good things about the school. Even though they shouldn't act that way, I believe there is some elitism going on. I don't think they just let anyone in but you would know better since you're in that process right now.

I found both the military's paranoia and school's elitism unfounded and unwarranted.

There are two schools on Randolph..
The elementary school is on one campus and the middle/high school on another campus.

The school district gets funding from the military as well as from the general government. Therefore, financially the schools are fairly well off. The actual school buildings are a little old, I believe from the 1940's-50's, but clean and well maintained.

If you don't live on base, the district stresses that it is a privilege to attend Randolph schools. Your child must maintain all passing grades or your he/she could be dismissed from the schools. If you make nice to the principal, they can be lenient on this as long as your child starts to improve promptly.

This time of year is stressful for all school districts, but particularly so for Randolph. Both schools have a shortage of people working to organize next year's class schedules and others are rushing to get all grades and exams in before the end of the year. However, this shouldn't be a reason for the registration organizers not to have gregarious attitude, be attentive, and helpful.

I'm am disappointed by your comment. Can you please explain to me how you were rudely treated? I don't understand why you would have to deal with military personnel if you were only going to the school, because normally the open that side gate near the campus so civilians can get in.

You're going a little too far with these comments. Have some respect for those who serve for your country. Thanks.
