If a person were to drive in from out of town to visit the new riverwalk extension that is opening this weekend...where is the best place to park to be able to walk and see things?

Thanks!

I'm planning at parking at the Pearl and wandering for a bit. Hopefully it won't be too packed.

Here's what's on tap at the River Walk's newest section opening | WOAI.COM: San Antonio News

Above article has a where to park section. The Perl does have a lot of parking under 281.

Does anybody know how the river barge rides are going to work? Can you get on the barge, say, at the Pearl and take a roundtrip down to the central part of the River Walk and back? I can't find anything on the website about the routes yet.

It looks like the barge routes north of the lock and south of the lock will be separate for now and that there is only river taxi service on the north side. Check out the link below under the heading "Using the River Taxis."

Museum reach parking and S.A. River Taxi info (http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/riverwalk/Museum_reach_parking_and_SA_River_Taxi_info.html - broken link)

"Eventually, narrated tours of the Museum Reach and one-way tickets will be offered."

You might be able to park under 281 like they do when they have Nightmare on Grayson St?

It really depends on how far you want to walk. You might be able to park @ the Southwest School of Arts & Crafts for free.. but it's probably 3/4 of a mile walk up toward Pearl Brewery.

I'm all about finding free or cheap street parking when I go downtown. I don't mind legging out another 1/4 mile to save a few bux.. I'm cheap like that

Here is a rough map of the Riverwalk that I created for my runs from the downtown Spectrum. I made this map one-way so I can use it as a template for extending the run up toward SAC or SPP. This might give you an idea of how far it is and where things are located.

Ultimately that is the idea, iirc. They went ahead and spent the extra money on the locking system so you could do that. Some city politicians and groups were against it because it was a significant amount of money but I think Hardberger was for it since it is a great idea -- pony up the cash now and enjoy it for years to come. You can charge the tourists a few extra bucks for the experience of having their boat rise 8'

Again, iirc, the unfortunate thing is you will not be able to go from downtown, north toward Pearl Brewery and then into Brack -- when they complete that leg.

I was jogging around there one day and spoke with an architect who told me the changes in elevation were too much. I think you might be able to take a barge, eventually, from just north of Pearl Brewery up through Brack. At least I really hope so!

I see - thanks for the info. Honestly, I'd be perfectly happy with a loop between downtown and the Pearl. It would be a lot of fun to park at the Pearl, take the barge down to Swig or V Bar then hop back on the barge to have dinner back at the Pearl.
