Just thank Jesus (The Biblical figure, not the guy you bought your hat from) you didn't get beat up and robbed by the Policia (witnessed on my last trip to Acuna).

Cool story, I've wanted to pop across the border just to see what it is like but right now I am prohibited from doing so because of my government contracting job...

It's only like $25/day...crazy not to purchase it if you're gonna do some driving over there.
It's a good idea to know Mexican laws before choosing to drive there without insurance. If you injure someone or the judge decides it was your fault even if you think it wasn't, you will pay for their hospital and followup care. They become your responsibility and you may have to pay upfront because if they let you leave, they know you may not followup on your obligations.

For crying out loud, this guy posts a trip report about Acuna and this turns into an Mexico Insurance thread. If he has no insurance, thats on HIM, not you !

Firstclassflyer, why does "something" tell you he didnt have insurance? WHO GIVES A RATS A** if he did or did not. Then, without even knowing if for a fact he did or did not, you decide to educate us about Mexico Insurance. NOBODY ASKED

Save the lectures and pontificating!

Glad you enjoyed Acuna Dopo

Maybe he asked for it by saying "By the way, I had no permit to drive my car in Mexico." Besides, are you the forum cops? Sheesh! If it educates someone about the importance of having insurance, then they've done a good thing.

"Something" told me that he didn't purchase it due to his past actions.Obviously you don't know this guy. He's admitted to doing things that are dangerous on our roads etc.If you don't like what I post , you have a few options:

Deal with it
Don't read it
Put me on ignore

I'm free to post my opinions just as you are...you can't and won't stop me, so don't even try.

We drive across into Nuevo Progreso and don't buy the insurance, but we don't drive much while we're there. We cross the bridge then park in the lot in the first block. We also get the truck washed and handwaxed while it's there - costs ten bucks for parking for the whole day plus the wash and wax.

I don't think we'd cruise around over there sans insurance but driving across the bridge is fine

In this day and age, I would not drive over without some kind of insurance. Back in the day, it was no biggie....things were calm. Mexico's border towns are hurting so much because of the bad press (and usually rightly so) due to the border violence. You can not help but feel sympathetic for the folks that live there. There's really no reason to go over there anymore as most of the things that made it worthwhile such as the food can now be found on the US side of the border. I remember buying cases of pure cane sugar coca cola glass bottles by the dozens for little to nothing. They jacked up the prices once the whole cane sugar/coke products can popularity. And now whatever savings once gets from going across to Mexico is lost at the bridge fee.
