Wood I think is better than getting a laminate.

If you have the money for real wood flooring, you might want to try Floor Depot, link is here: Hardwood Flooring San Antonio | Floor Depot

We decided to go with a laminate, we had Pergo flooring installed (Home Depot did a superb job) and it has held up very well over the past year. They have a couple of different price levels, depending on what you are looking for. You can find Pergo lam just about everywhere, including Home Depot and Lowe's. Plan to at least double your estimate when you add installation labor.

laminate's cheaper and cheaper still if you install yourself (very possible) . also easier to maintain . and in this texas climate, allows for the house to shift . and i come from old tongue and groove flooring .

Home Depot actually has some good wood floor options that are reasonably priced.

Laminate just has a different sound to it when walking on it.

I bought reclaimed pine for my kitchen and I love it. There is a plant a block off WW White and Profit or Dividend street on the East side. They actually buy huge timbers from building being demolished and cut and mill them into flooring. It's pine like you can't find any more really unique and beautiful, wish I could remember the name.

Cheap wood 9 times out of 10 is exactly that - cheap for a reason. The cheaper stuff I've seen in big box stores has a really poor finish that only seems to last 5-10 years before it starts to lift and flake on some planks. It also holds up poorly to UV light and fades quickly. Buyer beware...
