I like Krispy Kreme, but Shipley's is, by far, the very best...(!) followed closely by a hot glazed from Southern Maid.

My boss brought a dozen glazed in for us yesterday morning. They were too sugery. Just can't do the sweet foods thing that much anymore. Then again, I never quite liked Krispy Kreme donuts that much either. Used to work for Wal-Mart years back, and every morning after our shift, we would get the fresh baked donuts. Now those were good!

KK is reaping what they sowed right now: They over-expanded, seriously miscalculating their popularity, all while bastardizing their product into every gas station, workplace and corner store.

While usually smart business for a popular product, they didn't count on their doughnuts tasting like crap once they went cold. People are buying KK's due to their just out-of-the-fryer goodness, not a boxed for days, hockey puck-like sugar bomb. Once they got greedy, things went South fast.

A city like San Antonio could use less of KK, but it's a free-market and I understand anyone's right to open a business... Especially one with such a rabid following as KK.

This rumor has been going around for the last 3-4 years... and they're wildly popular where I'm from as well. Nothing has shut down either, so not sure if it's a competitor who is trying to GET them shut down, or if in fact, they are going to shut down.

There was a rumor in 2008 that Dunkin Donuts was going to open 75 stores in SA. If there's enough untapped donut business to support dozens more Dunkin stores, why wouldn't there be enough business to support the Krispy Kreme store at one of the most upscale, high-traffic parts of the city?

On Potranco, out in front of Steven's High, is Top Donuts from Houston. Very good, IMO.

With Dunkin Donuts, it's all about the coffee. Their donuts are just a relatively decent accompaniment for the coffee.
