My wife's car (Volvo 960) has a leaking rear main seal. Any recommendations on where to take it? I'm looking for somewhere that is honest and knows Volvos. TIA!

Thanks. Dunno if this car is so high end... it's 18 years old. I think it'd be about a 6-7 hour job. Get car on lift -> Drop driveshaft -> Remove transmission and there it is. The seal of course is $20 or so, getting to it is the fun part.

I've done the job on a smaller car, but don't have any way to get something this large high enough off the ground to clear the transmission. And time is short these days too.

yeah the shop some work on those quarter million cars/ and as well as European cars.

You have to remove the Clutch/converter and flywheel to get to it, its an easy job, and IMHO the hardest part is getting it out.

How bad is the leak? if its minor a can of seal fix should take care of it.

From the pics the wife sent it's a pretty good leak, seems to be coming from between the engine and transmission and just showed up all of a sudden. I'm in Seattle and will be here for a while longer - another reason why I have to farm this one out and why I'm looking for an honest place that won't take advantage of my wife's lack of knowledge about cars. I'd be fine taking it to any independent mechanic so long as they don't see the badge on the grille and jack up the rates because it's a RWD car and shouldn't be that bad. Probably a $500-$700 job I'm guessing. Maybe 6 or 7 hours by the shop + $30 for the part including markup.

960s only shipped with autos. A great big monster one that looks like it weighs 150lbs easily. IIRC the flywheel is about 6 bolts and I think on this model they get sealed too. I've DIY'd it on a smaller car before while I was in there doing a clutch job.

Might ask Vollmer on Blanco and Hilterbrandt - IIRC. We've had good luck with them fixing older imports.

We really like Ken's Texaco on Austin Highway (formerly on Broadway). Very honest - and I know they do this type of repair because they diagnosed it on my vehicle, but it was thankfully covered under our factory warranty....but Ken's provided an estimate and timeframe for completion in case it wasn't. Mine isn't an import, but I see Mercedes, Saab, BMW, etc., in his parking lot all the time.

Good luck! In case you'd like to call and check it out - Ken's Texaco phone number is 826-1572.

Although not in San Antonio, I take my SAAB to SAS (Swedish Auto Service) here in Austin. They servie SAABS and Volvos only. It is a small place and they really only have two guys that work exclusivley on either SAABS or Volvos. The dude who works on my car is named Omar and there is another guy who only works on Volvos. It's cool. If I have any questions I only speak with Omar. It can be difficult to find a good mechanic. Heck, I don't even take it to the dealer here.

even though his name suggests otherwise, ive taken my car to honda mike. he recently moved shops from his former location (bandera @ eckert), but only further down eckert.

he's done work on my 83 245 GLT turbo and 94 850 non turbo. doesnt skimp out, does it right the first way and gives you the news up front, doesnt beat around the bush.

charges a fair price also, doesnt charge insane rates or diagnostic fees. i think he might tow still also.

you can reach him at 210-889-4117. tell him robert with the volvos sent you.
