I remember going to a haunted house downtown when I was in high school that was operated by Youth for Christ. Does anyone remember going to it, where it was located and what the name was? My daughter can't believe that YFC would run a haunted house!

Yes...I remember that...and they had one since 2000 too. I remember taking our kids after getting back from Hawaii, and we moved back in 2000, so it was that Halloween or after.

I wasn't aware of one downtown, but recall the one that either YFC or a similar organization operated on the property of Wonderland Mall.

Moderator cut: quote

Ok...back OT. The only haunted house I ever knew of in the 70's was the Grayson Street one. I never did get to go, BTW.

I too am thinking you are referring to Hell House. Hell House poses as a haunted house, and many churches operate them during the Halloween season. Basically, they draw people in who want the haunted house experience, but the actual house is a series of real life dramas. For instance they have skita of an abortion, divorce, car wreck, etc. The attendees move from room to room, and then at the end they are in "hell". During the hell portion of the house, demons and satan come from all angles, and the people from the previous skits doing the bad things are taken into hell. Following that, the church has volunteers in the next room ready to talk to the attendees in hopes of leading them to Christ. My church operated one for a few years. As supportive as I am of my church, I was never to hip on Hell House, because I felt like it was being deceitful by posing as a haunted house. While some attendees did end up talking to the volunteers, some were angry and wanted their money back.

Yes, Youth for Christ did do a haunted house in the 70s and 80s, but it was not a Hell House format. I worked in one. It was called "Scream in the Dark". There were rules to the haunted house that were followed. For instance, no murder scenes, no satanic images or witches, no torture, and no blood. There were plenty of creepy and scary scenarios that stayed away from these themes, such as undead, graveyard scenes, evil scientist, sanitarium, etc. People used to go because it was not as horrible as other haunted houses - scary but without the disturbing imagery. Plus we really used a lot of atmosphere and surprise to create fear instead of shock and maming. I still used these principles to this day when I decorte my own haunted house at Halloween.

BTW, we did not use the house to scare people into converting to Christianity. If that had been their motivation, I never would have participated.

Yes.....we went to the one on Grayson. It was just a plain old fashioned spooky haunted house. There was no agenda back then....nothing nefarious or hidden messages. At the end, there was a cheesy sort of room with a "mad scientist" where we all sat on a bench and supposedly he was going to re-create Frankenstein. As he pulled the switch, we all jumped off the bench because there was a tiny little wire with a harmless electrical jolt that buzzed our behinds! It was so much fun!!! Outside there were bails of hay and hot apple cider. It's the way Halloween should have stayed....good times!!
